Maryam Bakhtiary

Post-Secondary

Maryam Bakhtiary’s journey to Canada is one of resilience, courage, and determination. Growing up in a low-income neighborhood where violence was common, she faced daily hardship and uncertainty. Despite these challenges, she dreamed of a safer, brighter future. That opportunity came when her family was accepted into Canada through a refugee program, offering the chance for a new beginning.

Adjusting to life in a new country was not easy — Maryam faced language barriers, cultural differences, and the challenge of navigating a new education system. Through persistence and hard work, she learned English, caught up with her studies, and began to thrive academically and socially.

Her story reflects an unwavering commitment to building a better life, and she now serves as an inspiring example of how perseverance and hope can transform even the most difficult beginnings into a promising future.

The Nellie McClung Foundation acknowledges with respect that we conduct our work on Treaty One Territory and in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis. We honour the Anishinaabeg, Anisininew (Oji-Cree), Ininiwak (Cree), Oceti Sakowin/Dakota Oyate, and Michif (Métis) Peoples as the original caretakers of this land. With gratitude and reciprocity, we recognize the songs, stories, teachings, and knowledge systems rooted here. The Treaties were entered into in good faith, as agreements to share, not surrender, the land. We are committed to upholding the spirit and intent of these agreements, and to building a future grounded in truth, equity, and meaningful collaboration.
