Kathryn Salas Chavez

Growing up in a warm and nurturing household, Kathryn's journey has been shaped by her parents' unwavering support and the resilience they demonstrated as immigrants from Peru to Canada in 2005. From an early age, Kathryn understood the value of education and the importance of giving back to her community.

Driven by her mother's wisdom that "money is temporary, but education and a kind heart are invaluable," Kathryn has embraced her academic journey with determination and compassion.

Kathryn's upbringing instilled in her a deep sense of empathy and a commitment to helping newcomers navigate the challenges of settling in Canada. Drawing from her own experiences living in Manitoba Housing units, Kathryn has dedicated herself to supporting children from low-income families, offering them opportunities for growth and empowerment.

As a guidance counselor and volunteer, Kathryn has demonstrated exceptional inclusivity and initiative, organizing activities and field trips to create a safe and nurturing environment for children facing adversity. Her long-term goal is to expand these initiatives, providing even more opportunities for underprivileged youth to thrive and find healthy outlets for their struggles.

In addition to her community work, Kathryn has been a leader within her school and university, spearheading initiatives to support women and non-binary individuals struggling with financial difficulties. Through her involvement with Dress for Success and Junior Achievement, Kathryn has empowered individuals to overcome barriers and pursue their dreams with confidence.

At the University of Manitoba's Asper School of Business, Kathryn continues to advocate for change as Co-Chair of The Commerce Week and a member of the Commerce Student Association. With a passion for social justice and a determination to make a difference, Kathryn is committed to using her education and voice to uplift marginalized communities and inspire future generations of Latina women.

Looking ahead, Kathryn plans to graduate with a major in accounting and pursue a Juris Doctor, fulfilling her dream of becoming a corporate lawyer. Inspired by trailblazers like Camille Vasquez, Kathryn aims to break down barriers and empower Latina women to pursue careers in male-dominated fields like STEAM and business.

As Walt Disney once said, "If you can dream it, you can do it." With her unwavering determination and compassionate spirit, Kathryn is poised to be the change she wishes to see in the world, inspiring others to dream big and make a lasting impact on society.
