15 YEARS

On this day DECEMBER 4 we are celebrating an ANNIVERSARY! It has been 15 years since the passing of a private member’s bill which called for the creation of the Nellie McClung Foundation and the Famous 5 Monument.

Through the tireless work of MLA representative for Charleswood Myrna Driedger, along with Opposition Leader Stuart Murray and MLA Frank Pitura, it was on this very day December 4, 2003, that the bill was UNANIMOUSLY passed.

However, it would be a few more years before the foundation would be established, and another few years after that before the monument would be complete and in its home on the Manitoba Legislative grounds.

Thank you for all of your support and dedicated interest in the foundation over the years. We hope to see you soon, perhaps at the exciting encore of playwright Sharon Bajer’s “Let Them Howl” performance this coming January, 20, 2019 in Winnipeg!

The Nellie McClung Foundation acknowledges with respect that we conduct our work on Treaty One Territory and in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis. We honour the Anishinaabeg, Anisininew (Oji-Cree), Ininiwak (Cree), Oceti Sakowin/Dakota Oyate, and Michif (Métis) Peoples as the original caretakers of this land. With gratitude and reciprocity, we recognize the songs, stories, teachings, and knowledge systems rooted here. The Treaties were entered into in good faith, as agreements to share, not surrender, the land. We are committed to upholding the spirit and intent of these agreements, and to building a future grounded in truth, equity, and meaningful collaboration.
