Presenting the Nellie McClung Trailblazer Scholarships

The Nellie McClung Trailblazer Scholarship awards are for self-identified female students considering careers in the exciting fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM), business or underrepresented trades. Careers in these areas offer excellent job opportunities, great earning potential and stimulating work environments.

 

Grade 12 Student Awards

Five awards of $1,000.00 will be granted to self-identified female students in grade 12 who have demonstrated an aptitude in an area of study that could lead to further education and/or careers in STEAM, business, or underrepresented trades programs (see list)

 

Post-Secondary Student Awards

Five awards of $1,750.00 will be granted to self-identified female students in their first year of post-secondary study in STEAM, business, or underrepresented trades programs.

Selection criteria for both these awards will ensure the diversity of Manitoba’s population is reflected, including awards to students from Indigenous, northern, and rural communities.

 

Who Is Eligible for the Nellie McClung Trailblazer Scholarships?

The Nellie McClung Trailblazer Scholarships are open to self-identified female students who are studying and living in Manitoba and are Manitoba Residents.


  • For the Grade 12 award category, a Manitoba Resident shall be defined as a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada who, at the application deadline, meets the following description:

  • Anyone who has resided continuously in Manitoba for any two years while attending a Manitoba high school.

  • For the post-secondary award category, a Manitoba Resident shall be defined as a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada who, at the application deadline, meets any one of the following two descriptions:

    • A Manitoba high school graduate

    • Anyone who has resided continuously in Manitoba for any two years following high school graduation.

  • The Grade 12 award category is open to self-identified female students currently enrolled in Grade 12 in a public or private secondary educational institution in Manitoba.

  

Who Will Award the Scholarships?

The Nellie McClung Foundation will grant the awards based on recommendations made by a selection committee.

 



The post-secondary award category is open to self-identified female students in their first year of post-secondary study in STEAM, business, or underrepresented trades programs. The student must be enrolled full-time (60 to 100 percent course load in each term).

 

The Following Criteria Will Be Considered in Selecting Award Recipients

  • Academic standing

  • Demonstration of leadership in school and community activities

  • Demonstration of interest and aptitude in a future career in steam, business, or underrepresented trades

  • Representation of the diversity of Manitoba’s population

  • Regional and program representation

 

Application Requirements

  • List any high school courses you have taken or are currently taking related to careers in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM), business or underrepresented trades.

  • A transcript of your most recent high school marks and proof of current enrolment in Grade 12 [photocopies are acceptable]

  • A brief typewritten essay (maximum 1,500 words) to tell us about yourself. Include your short and long-term career goals; what makes you passionate about a future career in STEAM, business, or underrepresented trades; your leadership skills demonstrated in the school setting and or your leadership contribution in the community; a description of any barriers you may have had to overcome to succeed; and why you deserve this award.

  • Up to two letters of support by people who can speak to your interest and aptitude in a future career in STEAM, business, or underrepresented trades, your leadership in the school setting and/or your commitment to your community (teachers, counsellors, supervisors, community leaders, mentors, etc.)




Applications Are Accepted Feb 1 - March 31 of Each Calendar Year.
